La Plata Woman Sentenced for Interstate Transportation of Stolen Property

ST. LOUIS, MO—Kimberly Jo Whisenand was sentenced to 30 months in prison in connection with her purchase of a vehicle with a check written on a closed account, Acting United States Attorney Michael W. Reap announced today. In addition to her prison sentence, she was also ordered to pay $24,931 in restitution.

On June 13, 2008, Whisenand purchased a 2008 Ford Mustang from Family Ford of Bloomfield, Inc., Bloomfield, Iowa, for the total price of $26,509.50. She paid for this automobile with a check drawn upon an account in her name at Alliant Bank, in Kirksville, MO, in the amount of $26,509.50. She drove the vehicle from Bloomfield, Iowa to Kirksville, MO. Alliant Bank closed this account in February 2008, and had notified her of this closure orally and by a letter sent to her home address.

“Kimberly Whisenand bought a new car with a bad check in another state thinking distance will allow her to get away with it,” said Roland Corvington, Special Agent in Charge of the FBI in St. Louis. “Now she will be locked up in federal prison for driving the stolen car across state lines.”

Whisenand, 33, LaPlata, MO, pleaded guilty July 20, to one felony count of interstate transportation of stolen property. She appeared today for sentencing before United States District Judge Henry E. Autrey today in St. Louis.

Reap commended the work on the case by the Kirksville Office of the Federal Bureau of Investigation, the Missouri State Highway Patrol, Kirksville Police Department, Prosecuting Attorney's Offices in Adair County, Linn County, Sullivan County, Schuyler County, and Clark County. Also, Reap commended the assistance of the Fort Madison, Iowa Police Department, the Bloomfield, Iowa Police Department and the Davis County, Iowa Sheriff's Department. Assistant United States Attorney Steven Muchnick handled the case for the U.S. Attorney’s Office.
